Swisher County Jail Release Paths
A person can leave Swisher County Jail on bond, after a dismissal or court order, after completing a county sentence, or through community supervision. The same person can also leave the building while remaining in custody. Transfers may go to TDCJ, another county, federal authorities, or ICE. Ask for existing booking and release or transfer records for a named person and a narrow date range. Include the booking number or case number if known. Request the booking date and time, actual release or transfer date and time, authority, reason, bond record, destination, and booking photograph. If part is withheld, ask for the cited law and the public portion that can be separated.
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 governs sheriff administrative records. The office need not create a special report or answer a broad research question. The statute's ten-business-day rules are not a guaranteed production deadline.
Swisher Jail Record Retention
The absence of an online archive does not erase the official jail record. Texas Local Schedule PS classifies the county jail register as permanent. Its minimum information includes the prisoner's name and gender, intake number, and the date and reason for release or transfer.
Booking-in and booking-out records, commitment documents, transfer orders, and release orders are generally retained for two years after release or transfer. Property inventories and conduct or good-time records have separate periods. A focused request can therefore recover historical facts long after a website result disappears.

Small Jail, Separate State Unit
A January 2022 Texas Commission on Jail Standards snapshot listed Swisher County Jail at 27 beds. Treat that as a dated figure, not a guaranteed current capacity. The county also posts a 2024 jail inspection, which identifies the facility but is not a release list.
Thomas R. Mechler Unit is a separate TDCJ prison and transfer unit near Tulia with a listed capacity of 606. The sheriff does not control its records or state release decisions. A casual reference to the “Tulia jail” should be resolved by asking which operator held the person.
Swisher Jail Transfer Follow-Up
A transfer to Mechler or another TDCJ unit requires the statewide TDCJ search. Use the TDCJ number or SID when available, then compare the conviction county, offense, age, and location. A projected release date is not an actual release event.
For federal custody, BOP applies only after entry into its system; PACER can show the federal case. ICE says a detainer can ask a jail to hold someone for up to 48 hours beyond the time the person would otherwise be released so ICE can assume custody. That handoff is not freedom in the community.
