Mechler Unit Release Paths

Thomas R. Mechler Unit is operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division. It is not an annex of Swisher County Jail. TDCJ can move a prisoner from Mechler to another state unit, or it can release a person through parole, mandatory supervision, discretionary mandatory supervision, or flat discharge.

Parole permits a person to serve part of the sentence in the community under TDCJ Parole Division rules. Mandatory supervision is also a supervised release, though eligibility and Board review depend on the offense and date. Flat discharge means the sentence has ended. An internal transfer is none of these. It is continued incarceration at a different TDCJ site.

Confirm Mechler Unit Release

Open the official TDCJ Inmate Search. A TDCJ number or SID is stronger than a name. When only a name is available, compare the conviction county, offense, age, and identifying number. Read the location and status literally.

1. Search by TDCJ number or SID when possible.
2. Open the matching state record and verify identity fields.
3. Check the listed unit, status, offense, and Projected Release Date.
4. Distinguish a new TDCJ location from a release type.
5. For an approved or scheduled event, call Review and Release Processing at 512-406-5202.
6. Request incarceration and discharge history when the public record is absent or unclear.

A county-only booking does not belong in the TDCJ search. The Swisher County released inmates page routes county, state, federal, and immigration records by last custodian.

Mechler Unit Records Contact

The official unit address is 4000 Highway 86 West, Tulia, TX 79088, one mile west of Tulia. The published facility number is 806-995-4109. Unit staff can answer facility questions, but central TDCJ records channels are the better route for a historic release or discharge record.

The no-charge TDCJ information email uses pia@tdcj.texas.gov. Give the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number. If the number is unknown, provide exact date of birth, or approximate age and conviction county, and place the name in the subject. That route can return location, offense, incarceration history, and Projected Release Date, but not photographs.

For a fuller record, use the TDCJ public-information request. Ask for the relevant incarceration episode, release or discharge date, release type, maximum expiration, parole or mandatory-supervision status, release location, and releasable records.

Mechler Transient Release Status

The official Mechler directory classifies the unit for male G1, G2, and transient custody. G1 and G2 are lower state custody classifications. “Transient” is the key release-search term because people can pass through Mechler during movement within the prison system.

A person may vanish from a unit-level reference while remaining fully incarcerated. The statewide TDCJ record should then show another location. If the public result has not caught up, Classification and Records history can identify the movement. Never convert a unit departure into a discharge without an actual release type and date.

Transient

A prisoner held as part of movement or temporary placement in the state system.

Projected Release Date

An administrative estimate that can change before release.

Maximum expiration

The point at which the sentence reaches its full term, subject to the official record.

Mandatory supervision

A form of release into the community under TDCJ supervision.

Mechler Unit Capacity and Role

TDCJ lists Mechler at an official capacity of 606 and says the unit was established in June 1992. Those facts distinguish it from the much smaller sheriff-operated county jail in Tulia. A January 2022 state jail-standards snapshot listed Swisher County Jail at 27 beds.

The difference is operational, not just size. The sheriff creates a county booking and release event. TDCJ creates a state incarceration, movement, parole, mandatory-supervision, or discharge record. Searching the wrong operator can produce a false conclusion.

Mechler Projected Release Records

TDCJ's exact field is Projected Release Date. It is not a promise or a court order. The calculation can depend on sentence dates and credit, mandatory-supervision eligibility, Board action, good-conduct classification, forfeitures, another sentence, a detainer, a required program, and release-plan approval.

Compare the projection with parole eligibility and maximum expiration. Parole eligibility is only the first point when the Board may act. Maximum expiration concerns the full sentence. Neither field alone proves the person has left Mechler or any other TDCJ unit.

Texas Government Code Chapter 498 treats good-conduct time as a privilege that can affect parole or mandatory-supervision eligibility. It does not reduce the court's sentence. Chapter 508 controls parole and mandatory-supervision rules and exclusions. Texas has no universal 85-percent service rule.

Mechler Pre-Release Program Limits

The official Mechler program list includes CHANGES/Pre-Release. It is a TDCJ facility program that can support preparation before release. The listing does not establish that a named prisoner was enrolled, completed it, obtained Board approval, or reached a release date.

Program information and release information must remain separate. If a record shows parole or mandatory supervision, Swisher County cases are assigned to the Plainview District Parole Office. That office supervises qualifying state releases; it does not operate county probation or decide whether the Board grants release.

Note: Program completion may be one part of processing, but the final TDCJ release event remains the controlling status record.

When Mechler Releases Occur

TDCJ says most scheduled releases take place from the assigned or designated releasing site during weekday business hours, excluding holidays. State guidance places the usual window from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The final date, time, and location can change.

Warrants, detainers, final sentence audits, program needs, and release-plan approval can affect the event. Call Review and Release Processing before travel. An old screenshot or projected date is not enough for pickup plans.

These are TDCJ logistics for state releases. They are not Swisher County Jail rules. No official county source published a matching local schedule.

Getting Home After Mechler Release

For eligible TDCJ releases, family may pick up the person at the designated site. TDCJ may instead provide bus transportation toward the station nearest the approved residence. The approved residence can matter when parole or mandatory supervision follows release.

Verify the destination and releasing site before departure. A special category may release somewhere other than the assigned unit, and final arrangements can move. Civilian clothing and eligible trust or release payments are state procedures. They should not be attributed to the sheriff's jail.

• Confirm the date with TDCJ release processing.
• Confirm the designated release site.
• Ask whether family pickup is approved.
• Verify bus arrangements when applicable.
• Keep supervision reporting instructions available.

Mechler Supervision After Release

Parole and mandatory supervision continue the sentence in the community. TDCJ Parole Division manages supervision, while the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles makes release decisions. Flat discharge is different because the sentence has ended.

A formal TDCJ record can include release dates, parole or mandatory-supervision status, supervising office, warrant information, and discharge date when releasable.

A warrant or absconder notation does not prove present custody. Check the issuing authority and current custodian separately.
